Industry
Nowadays Kherson has a powerful economic potential, within which 4382 large, medium and small enterprises work in 13 directions of economic activity.
The total ratio of production, manufactured by the enterprises of the city, in the total volume of production of the region is 45,3%.
From the very moment of the city foundation the direction toward building of ships for the Black Sea Fleet was determined. One September day in 1783 the first large warship “Katherine’s Glory” was launched from the shipways of the admiralty shipyard.
In 1803 Kherson became a province centre. In the city the civil shipbuilding was being developed and the enterprises in processing of agricultural production were appearing.
At the beginning of the 20th century dozens of millions of wheat poods were exported to England, Germany, Denmark and other countries every year. The large manufacturing enterprises were built: plant of agricultural machines (1909), confectionery plant (1928), tinned food factory named after the 8th of March (1929), electromachineplant (1932), cotton plant (1933); elevator (1931), wine-producing plant (1924), shoe factory (1935), wagon train plant (later – plant of cardan shafts - 1926 год), clothes factory “Bilshovychka” (1927), petroleum refinery (1938), plant of glass package (1938).
In general the branch formation of the city’s industrial complex was completed in the middle of the previous century, when the new producing capacities of ship-building plant (1951) combine plant (1956), petroleum refinery and cotton plant (1954) started to work.
From that time till nowadays the leading branches of industry have been: shipbuilding and machine building (7 shipbuilding plants and shipyards, combine plant, plant of cardan shafts and electromachineplant), food industry (butter-dairy and milk plant, tinned food factory, bread-baking plant, confectionery, etc.). The production of building materials, glass materials and furniture are well-developed. Lately chemical and petrochemical industries have been developed (the production of consumer products from material plastic, plastic, etc.).
From the finding of independence of Ukraine and during the process of economical restructuring, which is still in process now, to the list of city leading enterprises some new powerful enterprises were added, which grew from small business form. Among them there are: company with limited liability "Mechanical plant", which is busy with processing of nonferrous wastes; closed stock-company “Sada", which produces different types of vehicle accumulators; company with limited liability “Car assembly plant “Anto-Rus", which assembles busses; Ukrainian-German enterprises with limited liability “Avia-Pro” and “Techteks", which produce light aircrafts and gliders; private enterprise “Komplektavtodor”, which makes road signs, private manufacturing company "Tacho”, etc.; new enterprises of food industry and processing industry, which produce milk desserts, yogurts, mayonnaises, ketchups, etc.: daughter enterprise "Gauda" of company with limited liability "Stanislav & C", private producing company “Pani Kristina", company with limited liability "Agro-Yug", daughter enterprise of American company "Freedom Farm International Inc.".
The sales volume of industrial production within the city of Kherson in 2007 was 2445,6 mil. UAH. In the total volume of industrial production the biggest ration belongs to production of machine building (33,1%) and food industry (20,1%) branches.
During the whole year in the city the increase of volume of industrial production, turnover of enterprises of trade and catering, freight service, building and assembly services, consumer services, etc. are provided.
The industrial complex of Kherson (this is 94 enterprises in 12 economic directions) has a big economic and intellectual potential for collaboration with other regions of our country and establishment of commercial connections with other countries of the world.
The city manufacturing enterprises produce grain combines, ready-made garments, food products; shipbuilding and cotton-production are being reconstructed.
The leading branches in the city are: machine-building, metal-working, fuel industry, light industry, processing, chemical and food industries, and glass production.
Industrial complex of Kherson
The city industrial complex includes 96 leading enterprises, which performs their activity in 12 directions.
The basic city enterprises are:
- 7 shipbuilding and dock building plants and shipyards;
- 20 enterprises of machine-building, which produce grain and corn combines, agricultural machines, busses, light aircrafts, accumulators, cardan shafts, electric starters, generator, inductors, electric pumps and other types of machine-building production;
- 23 enterprises of food, beverage and tobacco production;
- Open stock-company “Khersonoblenergo" and open stock-company “Khersonskaya teplozentral" produce and deliver heat and electric energies;
- 5 enterprises are busy in metallurgy and metal working; the leading enterprise is a company with limited liability "Mechanical plant", which is busy with processing of nonferrous wastes;
- 8 enterprises of light industry, which produce suits for men and women (closed stock-company “Кrasen"), ready-made garments, working clothes and casual wear (company with limited liability „Lotos”, company with limited liability „Svitanok”, UTOG), etc.;
- 8 enterprises produce non-metal mineral products: closed stock-company "Ukrskloprom" (glass jars), closed stock-company “Holding company „Ukrenergosnab” (glass bottles), closed stock-company „Ukrainskiy silikat” (liquid glass, sodium silicate) and 3 enterprises of building-material production;
- 10 enterprises produce chemical and petrochemical production, among them there is State biological factory, which produces biologicals for animals;
- 9 enterprises are busy in pulp and paper industry and publishing;
- 2 enterprises produce furniture, road signs (private company " Komplektavtodor"), etc.;
- producing company with limited liability „Korabel” produces doors;
- company with limited liability „Georesursy” is busy with sand-extraction.
