Education

Education in Kherson has always taken a leading position and been on the high level. The Kherson school of navigation was the first and the only one school of such a kind on the South of Ukraine. These days it is not a common school, but the Maritime Institute, which celebrated its the 170th anniversary. The agricultural school for its one hundred years of existence has become the Agrarian University. Form the very beginning of Kherson foundation gymnasiums, state and parish schools and other types of educational institutions started their work. Our city education is based on historical and cultural heritage, received from our ancestors, on ethnical, linguistic and spiritual development of the region.

Because of improvement and reforming of educational process at high schools the new individually-oriented principles of educating have successfully been introduced, which persuade better material acceptance. Besides, the peculiar attention is given to computer and information technologies. It is not wonder that the bigger part of pupils continue their education at universities.

Form year to year the quantity of children, who receive education in their native Ukrainian language, has increased. But also children of national minorities do not suffer from the lack of attention. In Kherson there are dozens of schools, where the education is held in Russian, besides there are classes, where the education is held in Crimea Tatar, Polish, Hebrew and Greek.
The structure of professionally-oriented education in Kherson consists of several main directions, such as industry, agriculture, building, transport, communicating, trade, catering, and service business.

At professional-technical colleges there are more than 100 mayors. It happens rather often that their graduates with specialized technical education get full high education and several mayors. Nowadays professional-technical colleges are in the process of reorganization into institutions of new formation. Most of them have already become colleges of machine-building, ship-building and agrarian orientation; the new departments have been opened, which provide competitive mayors. At 12 professional-technical colleges there are more than four thousand students, who get modern mayors.

Almost all types and levels of education are available for Kherson citizens, including the university level. In the regional centre there are 29 universities and university branches from other cities of I – IV level of accreditation, where more than 40 thousand students get more than 50 mayors.

The partnership relations are developed with the institutions of France, Germany, Sweden, USA, Holland and Turkey. Students and educational advisors participate in different international projects, communicate through Internet.
Scientific activity of Kherson is represented by thousands of scientific works, textbooks, practical manuals, books, patents and inventions of scientists of the city. For example, the group of scientists of Kherson technical university became the State Price winner for invention of intensive technology of preparing, coloring and final processing of textile fabrics.
Out-of-school institutions in Kherson have a spread net. Children, who are busy in different hobby groups, sections, clubs of out-of-school institutions, take part in international, whole Ukrainian and regional competitions, exhibitions, contests, scientific-research projects and programs.
