The government program «Development of physical culture and sport» for 2007-2011 is directed on creation of the necessary conditions for strengthening and improvement of the townsfolk health.

There registered 71 sporting club and 10 rooms for schoolchildren in Kherson, where 168 sporting workers are employed and 8175 sportsmen have practice. Over 140 mass sporting arrangements were organized this year according to the Municipal program of physical culture and sport development, in which over 20 thousand citizens participated.

The most popular sporting clubs of the city are as follows: «Hvardiyets» (“Guardsman”), «Samson», «Viktoriya» (“Victory”), football club «CK Kherson». The female command of the Kherson handball club «Dnipryanka» plays at the Super League of Ukraine in handball among the woman’s commands.

Considerable attention is paid to the work with sportsmen who have limited possibilities. The child and youth school is opened in cooperation with the Regional Center «Invasport». As well yearly there is a sport and athletic meeting "Have faith in yourself" in 11 kinds of sports. For this purpose facility of the city are given on favorable terms.

Competitions, sport and athletic meetings are traditional for our city, such as:

• «Desant-44», Track-and-field Run
• «Oars of Hopes», Finale of All-Ukrainian Rowing on Kayaks and Canoes Competitions
• Freestyle Wrestling Tournament, devoted to memory of Illia Kulik
• Opened Sporting Gymnastics Tournament, devoted to Larisa Latinina
• «Muey-tan'» Thai Boxing Tournament, devoted to memory of Sergiy Filippovich
• Easten Martial Arts Competition
• Football Championship and cups of the city among the collectives of physical culture
• The "Small Olympic games" in 11 kinds of sport in which more than 5500 schoolchildren participate
• Sport and athletic meetings for pre-conscription and draft young people
• "Have faith in yourself", Sport and athletic meetings among children-invalids in 11 kinds of sport
• Other athletic-mass arrangements of different level.

The combined city teams in 20 kinds of sport took part in the III Summer Sporting Games of Kherson region in 2007 and gained the team lead.

There is 624 sporting buildings in the city where 42,5 thousands of townsfolk are engaged in all types of athletic-health work, including:

• 111 sporting halls, including the sporting halls of enterprises and establishments of the city (general area exceeds 17760 sq. m);
• 4 swimming pools;
• 5 stadiums, 247 sporting grounds among which: 28 tennis courts, 25 football fields;
• 9 shooting-galleries;
• 1 sporting building with artificial ice;
• 34 grounds with trainer equipment;
• Chess-draughts center;
• 16 water and sport bases.

There are a lot of various sporting establishments in the city:

• Higher specialized school of physical culture;
• School of higher sporting skills;
• 2 child and youth clubs of physical training;
• 11 sporting schools for child and youth;
• 6 specialized child and youth schools of Olympic reserve.

Kherson is a city of young people, where more than 100 000 young people live. There are a lot of establishments that address their concern to the problems of young people and teenagers. Their activity is directed on organization of spare time and development of young people’s activity; civil and patriotic education of young people; realization of arrangements on professional education and employment.

In future the system of athletic-sporting establishments will be increased that let many townspeople to go in for sports and recruit.
