Geography and Climate

The city of Kherson is an administrative, industrial and cultural center of Kherson Region, situated in the South of Ukraine, on the right bank of the Dnipro river, 26 km. away from Dniprovskiy estuary and 90 km. from the Black sea.
Geographical coordinates of the city are47° northern latitude and 33° east longitude. The locality is plain tilting to the Dnipro and its tributary, the Koshova river.
The Dnipro river is the main transit watercourse.The valley of the river is 4-6 km. wide. The right bank is high and the left one is sloping, low-lying. On the way to the city the Dnipro enters a low-lying sandy valley, having Kherson overflow land 10 km. wide in its water meadow. The overflow land is presented with the system of islands, divided with channels and arms. Dnipro’s riverbed is very forked. There are fairways in several arms. It is 5-7 m. deep. The flow velocity is 0,6-0,7 mps. The surface waters of the city are presented by the Dnipro, the Koshova, and the Viryovchyna water areas.
Insignificant altitude of the territory above sea level, absence of mountains, close disposition to the Black and Azov seas influenced Kherson and Kherson region climate formation.
The city of Kherson is situated in continental part of midlatitude climatic zone and is characterized with continental climate, winters with little snow and hot arid summer.
The climate of the city is transitive from steppe to maritime.
The frost-free period lasts 170-180 days on a par, and as much as 200 days in some years. Average quantity of blanket-of-snow days is 30-40. Anticyclonic weather prevails in summer with a considerable number of clear sunny days. There often happen hot dry winds and dust storms. The warmest summer month is July, with the temperature of +23°С. Maximal temperature is +40°С.
Kherson territory coming within the jurisdiction of Kherson City Council is 104 492.22 acre, including – 49 114.17 acre of farming lands. Kherson has an area of 16 067.53 acre.
Basic soils are dark-chestnut solonetzic soils of different degrees of erosion and texture. In the bottoms and floodplain of the Dnipro there are poic-dark-chestnut and mud soils.DISTANCE FROM KHERSON TO
